Mac OS X Mail Default Encoding

Unlike Safari, it’s quite strange and no way to set default encoding in preference in Mail.
Also you may get complaints from friends that using web mail which doesn’t not convert encoding automatically.
To make sure every time when you compose a new email, it’s using the encoding you want, you can invoke this command from Terminal.

e.g. Hong Kong Chinese Character Set
defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "BIG5-HKSCS"

Many features in the new Safari 3 bundled with Leopard, not everybody would realize but once you know you will definitely be amazed.

Go to Terminal and type to enable this switch.

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true

Or you can use xMod to do the same.

Have you even noticed “Inspect Element” when you ctrl-click on a web page?

Amazingly, it would show a DOM element inspector window or inline below the page! You can inspect the source code in plain text or XML hierarchy, highlight style sheet and check style properties on right panel. It’s so cool for web developer!

And you see Console and Network on lower left-hand corner. I don’t know what’s the use of Console. But if you press on Network, it will bring up another gorgeous view!! It shows how long Safari took to load all the web contents in the page and also their size!

Patch Eclipse for Leopard

Including myself, many Java developers are scratching their heads because of the stability issue of Eclipse after upgrading their Mac OS X to Leopard. It’s mentioned in so many Java forums and also Apple Discussion forum, but don’t know why neither Eclipse nor Apple has update about problem. Eclipse would crash and close itself if you try some of your familiar shortcut keys.

Hopefully, I searched the net and thanks to plan4041, he posted a hint how to resolve this problem. You may find the latest build of Eclipse from http://update.eclipse.org/downloads/. For me, I’m using 3.3, so I got M20080130-0800. Extract the latest build and copy these 2 files from the build to replace your local copy.

/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt_3.3.2.vXXXXX.jar
/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt.carbon.macosx_3.3.2.vXXXXX.jar

I don’t know what have been changed in the build lately and not sure if it has solved the problem totally. But what I feel is now I can use command+shift+T that I used most and it would crashed Eclipse very often before.

Honestly I’m happy with Leopard except this issue. Hope you can still continue your Java development in Leopard!

OS X Leopard 其中一項強大又鮮為人留意的功能便是Dictionary。特別之處在於它留下了一條小小的尾巴，用戶其實可以自由增減字典集，Leopard本身預載但沒有被啟動的日文字典便是一個好例子。

今天收到一篇麥課一班論壇裡提到怎樣為Leopard增加字典集的留言。於是我便照著以同一方法「翻譯」了繁體中文的《牛津現代英語雙解詞典》和《２１世紀英漢漢英雙向詞典》，大家只要下載並解壓到 ~/Library/Dictionaries 便大功告成！如果嫌不夠還可以到這裡下載更多字典，再依照麥課班的方法自己再轉換。

Dictionary變強了!

Ctrl + Command + D 沒問題

There are so many funny things in Leopard if you pay attention. One I found is the new network sharing appears in Finder. Did you notice the machine icon? I’m not sure that guy is using PC or just my Mac can’t make connection with it. But you can see the familiar blue screen! I wonder it’s Steve Jobs playing this dirty joke with Bill Gates!

Oh, come on! Failed to connect.

Bingo! It’s Mac, my friend? May be Linux.

My Leopard Review

Not sure if you got your copy of Leopard already. Luckily I’ve got it and had it installed on 26th morning. I think all media and magazines have already covered big changes. Now let me share little things that worth to mention. I spent whole night yesterday to fresh install every applications. So far, I didn’t get many compatibility problem except these applications.

PhotoRescue – can’t open successfully
FanControl – fan speed will become negative! so it can’t operate at all.

I guess some old plugin for Safari, like SafariStand may not work too. And some system utility applications like Cocktail I didn’t try. Also, UI customization programs like ShapeShifter and UNO, I didn’t try also. Aperture which is my big concern, it has update (1.5.6) for Leopard, so remember to run System Update after installing it. I’m running Time Machine when typing this. Few points I want to highlight.

It’s not bootable, Time Machine would only store your file diff in a special folder. So don’t worry it would format your hard disk. The value of of hard drive clone software like SuperDuper is still preserved.
I think it’s common sense that you need to prepare your storage more than your machine space.
It doesn’t have detail opinion. It would run hourly, keep daily backup for a month and weekly backup until your drive is full.
It has opinion that you can skip to backup drive or folder.

Terminal becomes more fancy now, you can even select or specify color theme for your terminal. I think it must be wonderful for many geeks!Except owner and permission you may notify ACL attribute attached to files from terminal.

Bluetooth, Network in Preference share common but new user interface. Leopard has built-in VNC server and client, they called it Screen Share. Stack is cool!! It has “Downloads” folder created in every user account, and by default the Downloads folder will be aliased in your Dock as Stack. It’s so convenient to find what you just downloaded. Other applications like Mail, Preview have huge changes! Finder, you may think it’s a new application. There’re so many things to mention. :)

今次不得不稱讚蘋果的出貨效率，26日推出的Leopard他們23日已經開始送貨。出乎意料，竟然26日一大早便收到，還比美國的發報時間足足早了六小時，真是一大驚喜！

美國的傢伙，你們慢慢等吧！
